We’ve come to expect a certain level of unkempt “coolness” from the Proenza Schouler beauty look each season, and for spring, Paul Hanlon for Fekkai wanted the girls’ hair to look purposefully scraggly and lived-in. He tied a scarf around each model’s neck—over the hair—to create a dent, as if her hair had gotten stuck under her collar. Diane Kendal for MAC added some smudged eyeliner under the eyes, and these urban girls were good to go.

Guido Palau for Redken created a rock ‘n’ roll, “party girl” look inspired by Edie Sedgwick for the Marc Jacobs show. He pulled the hair into a disheveled, low-slung ponytail with a deep side part, and teased near the crown for extra volume. Francois Nars wanted to give Edie’s classic makeup look a modern update, so he concentrated on strong, square eyebrows, pale skin (no blush or lipstick!) and lots of mascara.

Wes Gordon’s uptown girls got down and dirty this season: Bumble and bumble’s Laurent Philippon created a rough, dreadlock-inspired style that was a surprising contrast to the collection. We’ve never seen bedhead look so good!

Overzealous tweezing can lead to emaciated brows and bald patches, where hair only grows back irregularly. Use a protein-spiked brow gel to stimulate healthy growth and brow fillers to shade in problem areas.

Sure, it’s chilly in your bathroom in the morning, but don’t be tempted to crank up the heat in the shower. Hot water followed by cool, dry air leads to rough skin. To lock in moisture post-shower, pat — don’t rub — yourself dry, and coat skin in a thick alpha-hydroxy lotion.

Large pores are caused by two things: genetics and age. Want to shrink them? Go to a dermatologist or a spa to get microdermabrasion treatments, a type of facial that gently sloughs off the dead surface layer of skin.

Keep your eyes open when applying liquid liner — otherwise your line will look uneven. Apply by drawing three dashes, one on the corner, one in the middle, and one on the inside corner of your eye. Then go back and connect the dashes for a smooth line.

For full lips go for a glossy look. Try first outlining the perimeter of your lips using a concealer brush dipped in bronzer two shades deeper than your skin tone. Then, top pout with gold, peach, or coral gloss.

Prevent dead-skin pileup by using a pumice stone in the shower — and don’t be tempted into using a razor. That will only cause more skin to grow back. Pamper your feet with moisturizing facial masks.

Want to make your small eyes look bigger? Stay away from dark eyeshadows. Start with a nude base, then apply shadow a shade or two darker than the base to your crease and use your finger to blend the color up toward your eyebrow.

Even if you didn’t get enough sleep last night, your skin doesn’t have to give you away. Nothing wakes up a face like bright cheek color. Consider a cream blush with red or pink overtones. Blend into the apples of your cheeks and set with loose powder.

For a modern take on luminous skin, try pearlized pink-sand shades on lids and cheeks. With a pale matte mouth, you’ll look rock-club cool (not disco)

REAL HIT

Find a darker hue that flatters. If you have lighter features and want to go darker, go for a medium or dark brown instead of black. To get this style, roughly dry hair on a medium heat without applying any product beforehand. After hair is dry, add a dry spray wax and work through hair until you get that perfect unwashed look, and add a teensy bit of shine just to your bangs.

Give hair some life with texture and shine. Work a texture cream through the ends of your hair. Take a flat iron and use a little heat at the roots so everything is straight and shiny. Use a small curling iron on the ends to make them flip up a bit so you get a different sort of texture. Finish with a shine serum.

Grow out bangs in style by flat-ironing them so that they fall off to the side and stay that way. Dry hair with a round brush-use a big dollop of smoothing styling créme to tame frizzies without greasiness.

Use a super-moisturizing shampoo — thick, textured hair needs more moisture than most. Run a curl cream through your damp and newly hydrated locks, and use a diffuser on medium heat to kick-start the drying. Diffuse until hair is half-dry. Once hair is dry, go back in and use a large-barrel curling iron on three or four two-inch sections.

Start by finger-combing through dry hair to get a little volume and separation. Mist hair with spray gel to give separation, texture and hold, and pull one side loosely back, keeping hair in front of your ear.
